Look forward to reading about your progress, Megan. I'm learning too; my goal is to swim to the fountain and back at Oriental Bay, Wellington by the end of the year. A fair bit easier than your goal! Fingers crossed!

Nev,
Thats really interesting. I must say i have got more information here than i have from my consultant. I have been cycling like never before and it is holding well at the moment, its just the fear in the back of my head all the time, i have a funny limp even tho i have no pain, Fair play to you to keep going back to sport. I dont ever want to give up activity completely. I would like to mention that i also torn mine on a astroturf pitch. I firmly believe if i was on normal grass that i would have just skid on the grass but because the ground is so rigid something had to give and it just happened to be my knee. Thanks for all the info.

Hi, I have torn my ACL 3 times, twice in my right knee and once in my left knee. All three were whilst playing field hockey on astroturf, first sand based and the following 2 on water.
1st - 1994 Right, patella graft with big scar and metal screws. Extensive rehab following and knee was solid thereafter.
2nd - 2004 Left, hamstring graft. surgeon told me to strengthen muscles around knee for a year first and then go see him again in a year. I did, had surgery the following year and the rehab was insanely succesful thanks to the muscles having pre-hab.
3rd - 2006 Right, hamstring graft. poor rehab following op and have battled ever since.
Arthritis has set in but I still play hockey and started trail running (not recommended for bad knees) and the knee is far from perfect but am still very active.
My recommendation is stregnthen the muscles around the knee first and see if that provides enough support. If not, at least your re-hab will be far easier, quicker and more succesfull.

Hi Regina
The important thing to remember is that at the end of the day, it's your knee. No one can force you to have anything done to it unless you want it to. That consent process should underpin any treatment by any health professional. So if you feel you are back to doing the level of function that you are happy with, then fantastic, that is probably the answer. There is certainly a good percentage of even high level sportsman that operate very well without an intact ACL. A brace while skiing will certainly help, as it will help to stabilize the knee and give some degree of feedback to the body in the absence of the ACL.
The other thing to remember is you don't have to have it operated on right now. You can always give it some time, try your normal activities, and if they aren't going well, then have the surgery later down the track. It's not like some other surgeries where you have t have it sooner rather than later for various factors. Some would argue that delaying or not having the surgery may result in early osteoarthritis in the knee. The reality is, regardless of whether you have surgery or not, you are now about a thousand times more likely to get in anyway compared to someone who hasn't done the injury (sorry for the bad news there!).
Hope that helps, and I would be interested to hear what you decide and how it progresses.
Cheers
Andy

Hi
I have torn my Acl about 8 weeks ago, the surgeon thinks i should have the surgery as he feels its more difficult for women to get away without surgery and women dont have as much muscle around the knee for support as men do. But the difficulty is, I have absolutely no pain at the moment and have done a lot of cycling and work on my knee and its in reasonably good shape, i can go walking and light jogging and cycling of course but i would love to continue to go sking on an annual holiday. Would wearing a brace do the trick while sking and avoid the surgery altogether. I wouldnt be a champion skier or anything just a social one. If i was in major pain i think it would be easier to make my mind up.. please help...
